A child with a disability can experience joy and freedom on horseback. Riding a powerful yet gentle steed, feeling a smooth, steady stride opens new worlds and shatters old boundaries. Ride To Walk (RTW) provides this life-changing opportunity that would be otherwise unattainable for these children.
RTW enhances the lives of children and young adults with neurological disabilities by providing innovative therapeutic horseback riding activities adapted to participants’ needs and abilities. With six employees, 50 volunteers, and nine horses, RTW provides support for individuals with disabilities, their parents/caregivers, and our community.
In 1985, Dr. Kristine Corn, DPT launched RTW, and in 1997, found its current 21-acre home in the Lincoln hills. The rolling setting with oak trees and a lake invigorates participants – they love the atmosphere, and adore the volunteers and horses.
Therapeutic riding benefits kids with autism, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, attention deficit disorder, head trauma, and more. Riders often show improved flexibility, balance, and muscle strength. "We strive to make this fun, so kids are improving physically and emotionally," says Corn, executive director. "The relationship with the horse can increase confidence, patience, and self-esteem."
In 2009, RTW lost government funding – and 40 of 80 participants. The program needs sponsors to wholly or partially fund a child at $5,000 or a horse at $1,800 per year. RTW always needs volunteers, too, especially those who love kids and animals.
RTW invites the community to their property for three fundraisers: the Niello Volkswagen Ranch Run car show on April 15, 2012; Ally’s Run, a 5/10k run over natural terrain on June 9, 2012; and the Boots & Scoots BBQ and barn dance on September 15, 2012. This tranquil property is also available for corporate picnics, weddings, or almost any outdoor event.
Please reach deep into your heart, realize the needs of a child with a disability, and make it possible for the child to reach a dream.
